Calming nervous pets (part 2)
When pets become stressed, something as simple as a gentle stroke can help to relieve anxiety. Studies have shown pets experience increases in serotonin, endorphin, prolactin, dopamine and beta-phenylethylamine levels after a session of petting. In addition, cortisol, a stress response hormone, decreases.
The chest, shoulders, under the chin and the base of the neck are some of best places to pet a dog. Cats enjoy being petted on the head, shoulders, cheeks and nose.
Take a moment to sit with them, give them a little TLC and not only will their stress level go down, but yours may decrease as well.
